Dame Evelyn Glennie, DBE is a percussionist and composer who started to lose her hearing at 8 .....
She has released lots of successful albums and performs with orchestras and famous contemporary artists around the world. Often playing barefoot during both live and studio performances, she says it allows her to feel the music better, and claims to have taught herself to hear with parts of her body other than her ears!
Evelyn has a long long list of awards, including many honorary doctorates from UK universities, and not 1 but 2 Grammys. One highlight of her music career was to perform live at the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games in London 2012, leading led a thousand drummers in the opening piece of music - and then playing the Aluphone during the ceremony for lighting the Olympic cauldron. She even plays the bagpipes (yes, she's Scottish)!
She's giving back to society by establishing in collaboration with fellow musicians Julian Lloyd Weber and Sir James Galway, the Music Education Consortium. They successfully lobbied for 332 million pounds to develop music education and musical resources in Britain.
She's on Ted Talk too. Did I mention she started to lose her hearing at 8 and lost nearly all of her hearing by age 12? Phenomenal performer, remarkable achievements.
